Apologizing for not writing sooner because "I have had an immense number of letters to look over, and make notes from, of poor Miss [Charlotte] Brontë's lately ... "; mentioning the impossibility of a meeting with Mrs. Browning; and reporting that Lady Hattierton had written that "Sir James had perhaps been one of Miss Brontë's most confidential friends, and had seen a great deal, comparatively speaking, of her after her marriage"; and reporting on a visit to Mr. James, during which "he was hardly able to speak of anything but Miss Brontë."
